Dr. H M Dalaya 1921-2004
Dr. Harichand Megha Dalaya, born on 22nd October , 1921, in Karachi, British India, was an Agriculture Engineer and Dairy Technologist from Pune and Michigan State University, respectively, and completed advanced business management at Harvard. Dr. Dalaya returned to India amid the challenges of post-partition.
At that time, Amul dairy faced the challenge of managing surplus milk production during winter. Limited demand led to 'milk holidays,' halting farmers' milk deposits, as buffalo milk was considered unsuitable for spray-drying due to its high fat content. Dr. Dalaya innovated and developed the world's first buffalo milk spray-dryer, with support from Dr. Kurien and Chairman Shri Tribhuvandas Patel. This crucial invention, installed at Amul Dairy in 1955, enabled Amul to accept milk year-round, stabilize prices, and expand markets, revolutionizing the dairy industry.
Dr. Dalaya’s work was instrumental in the success of Amul, alongside Dr. Verghese Kurien and Shri. Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel. His legacy is celebrated for enhancing the reach of dairy products across the country.
Dr. Dalaya's expertise also led to the production of infant milk food, cheddar, and processed cheese from buffalo milk, challenging multinational norms. Known for his pragmatic approach, Dalaya implemented cost-saving measures and fostered a culture of innovation and teamwork. His leadership style, characterized by integrity and accessibility, left a lasting impact on Amul. He ensured resilience during crises and played a key role in collaboration with Dr. Kurien to transform India's dairy sector, achieving self-sufficiency and setting an example of ethical leadership and innovation.
