Dr. Amit Vyas, MD Amul Dairy, delivered an impactful lead lecture on “Evolution of Dairy Sector in Gujarat” at the Conclave on the Development of Dairy, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives in Assam, organized by Raj Bhavan Assam, with Indian Council of Agricultural Research – NDRI, MoA&FW, Govt. of India, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, Assam & Dept of Coop., Govt. of Assam.
The event was inaugurated by Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Hon’ble Governor of Assam, in august presence of Sri Krishnendu Paul, Hon’ble Minister, AH & Veterinary Department, & Sri Jogen Mohan, Hon’ble Minister, Dept of Coop., Govt. of Assam.
The session was graced by Smti Panchali Kakati, ACS, Secretary to Govt. of Assam and Director, Dairy Development, Assam, Dr. S N Bhowmik, Principal Private Secretary to Hon’ble Governor, Assam, Shri S B Bose, MD, NEDFL, Shri Gajanan S K Tawade, Dy Commissioner, Dairy Development Dept, Govt. of Maharashtra, Dr. Jayanta Kumar Goswami, Director, AH & Veterinary, Assam, & Dr. Dheer Singh, Director, ICAR-NDRI Karnal.
Dr. Vyas highlighted the inspiring journey of Amul, which began in 1946 as a small cooperative movement in Anand, enters its 80th year, & stands today as one of the world’s largest dairy cooperatives, handling over 3.7 crore litres of milk per day. He highlighted that Amul’s success stems from cooperation, farmer empowerment, technology, and sustainability—making Gujarat’s dairy sector a global benchmark.
Dr. Vyas announced Amul’s replication of the Gujarat model in Assam with 114 Village Dairy Cooperative Societies to empower rural farmers and build sustainable livelihoods. He outlined plans to expand into exports, organic and protein-based products, & taxi cooperatives, reaffirming Amul’s commitment to inclusive growth. He also expressed happiness that both Amul and NDDB are working for farmers’ welfare.
Dr. Amit Vyas was part of the thematic session also focusing on Breeding, Genetics & Animal Health, sharing stage with speakers from ICAR-NDRI, NDDB, & College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara. In the session, Dr. Vyas further stressed the importance of Scientific Breeding & Genetic Improvement and the adoption of technology-driven systems, including smart tools like digital AI straw thawing machines, to enhance productivity & efficiency. He announced Amul’s upcoming Bull Station in Assam & 14 Scientific Calf Rearing Farms in the Anand region to promote advanced dairy management practices.
Reiterating Amul’s philosophy of valuation through innovation, supported by Digitalization and Technology, he emphasized that Amul initiative aims to enhance farmer prosperity while ensuring consumer value. He also extended heartfelt gratitude to Govt. of Assam for supporting Amul in the state.
